Young Cattlemen's Committee

Ryan Nelson
YCC Chair Ryan Nelson

Ryan Nelson represents the Young California Committee as the 2008 YCC Chair. A student at California State University, Fresno, Ryan is a fourth-year animal science major, emphasizing in livestock production.

As YCC Chair, Ryan said he is looking forward to representing California’s Young Cattlemen and women at various events throughout the state.

As a part owner in his family’s Wilton ranch, Five Star Land and Livestock, Ryan said he takes great pride in his work both on and off the ranch. Through his own agriculture background, Ryan said he looks forward to the YCC officer position as he believes he can make a positive impact on the YCC as well as the CCA.

“So far I have thoroughly enjoyed the interaction that I have had with other young cattlemen from different schools as well as with the CCA staff,” he said.

A fifth generation Angus breeder, Ryan says his plans for his officer term are to bring greater involvement to the YCC. And with that, he said, must come an increase in membership.

“I strongly believe that there is a lot that can be gained from being a YCC member,” Ryan says. “I am also focused on increasing YCC funds so that more opportunities may be gained by more of our members and officers.”

Shannon Aguilar
YCC Vice Chair Shannon Aguilar

Shannon Aguilar serves as the Young California Committee’s Vice Chair for 2008. Shannon said a small part of her job is assisting with fundraising, planning ranch tours and reaching out to all YCC members, from the college level down. On a larger scale, Shannon said being active in the association and getting the word out about opportunities in YCC are her primary duties.

From Somis, Shannon currently lives in San Luis Obispo where she is a senior Agribusiness major at California Polytechnic State University.

An eight-year CCA member, Shannon said she wants to work with YCC to help make a difference in the future of the cattle industry.  “It is important to keep the future strong and to do so we must start with the today’s youth,” Shannon said.

Like many youth, Shannon began her involvement in the cattle industry during her 4-H years. She said she was an extremely active member of 4-H, showing livestock for 10 years. She later became a member of the Ventura County Cattlemen’s Association. With a love for rural lifestyle and the people of the industry, Shannon chose to further her education in agriculture. At Cal Poly, she has worked on many cattle enterprises, including Swanton Stocker Enterprise, the Cal Poly Bull Test, Escuela Ranch and the Western Bonanza Jr. Livestock Show. She is currently the Vice President of the Cal Poly’s Young Cattlemen

“
I look forward to traveling and meeting new people within the industry. I am excited to reach out and find new members to join YCC and encourage current members to become more involved,” Shannon said. “As your vice chair, I am dedicated to connecting all members with the latest information in the cattle industry, while seeking greater member participation.”

Jolene Moxon
YCC Secretary Jolene Moxon

The 2008 Young Cattlemen’s Committee Secretary is Jolene Moxon. A 20-year-old from Arcata, Jolene is currently attending school at California State University, Chico. Upon graduating in animal Science, Jolene would like to attend graduate school and obtain a master’s degree in ruminant nutrition.

Also a member and an officer for the Chico State Young Cattlemen’s Association, Jolene said she wanted to serve YCC to represent her collegiate club at the state level.

Jolene said her family has always been involved in animal agriculture. From beef cattle and sheep to the dairy industry, Jolene said there are not many ranching aspects that she is not familiar with.

Jolene said she hopes to add a different outlook to YCC and learn from her fellow officers.

“I think it is important for others to be involved in YCC because is brings the different ag colleges together and brings different students together who come from very different backgrounds,” Jolene said.
