One of CCA’s top legislative priorities remains the complete elimination of the federal death tax. The federal estate tax has wreaked havoc on many farm and ranch families seeking to pass the operation to the next generation. CCA works at both the state and federal level to reduce the tax burden on producers while continuing to lobby for a complete abolition of the estate tax. Recently the estate tax was reduced to nothing as part of the last stage of the tax cuts adopted by Congress under President George W. Bush. The legislation threatened to sunset and return to the original level of $1 million at 55 percent. Unfortunately, Congress punted a long-term fix and settled for a rate of the $5 million of total assets to be assessed at 35 percent. CCA will remain as a principal advocate for the complete elimination of the death tax in the future.
